Alterra is a developer group that has been working in the GTA for the last 40 years and aims to shape the aesthetic for entire districts. They must follow an important path if they hope to accomplish this goal. They manage their own team and take an outside-in approach to their work. This philosophy is integral to every level of their development.
They are led by their president and CEO Robert Cooper. Robert originally accepted a job with them with the expectation that it was going to be a short term solution. Fast forward 27 years, and Robert is now at the helm of the entire company, and for good reason. Among other notable achievements, Robert is the youngest person to ever be awarded with the prestigious Home Builders Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
At the conception of a project, their outside-in philosophy leads them to understand their surroundings. They believe that if they’re going to define a district, they first have to understand it. Their committed team meets with clients to work together and visualize how the clients view their desired community. They figure out what the community is and what it could be. The relationship between people and place is at the foundation of their outside-in philosophy.
After meeting with their client, the team begins to consider what the community already has to offer. What stories through its history, current architecture and unique culture have to offer the project? How can the new building characterize all of those elements into a single beacon? Once all the outside information is gathered, they work to distill the meaning of the current community into evocative and innovative buildings.
While most of their work is with condominiums, Alterra has also created some commercial buildings for Canadian institutions. These include Shoppers Drug Mart, Winners and Sears.
The construction of these buildings proves that Alterra is a diverse developer and they aim to improve communities on every level. Alterra strives to have the highest construction standards in the entire industry and once again employ their tried and true philosophy into gathering their materials. They search for the best materials and goods from outside and bring them into their buildings.
Their integrity, dedication to community and unique philosophy have led them to create over 5,000 homes and have earned them awards for their condominiums. Robert Cooper looks to add to his life’s achievements as he moves forward with his company to create the shape of entire communities.
Post House Condominium
This 21-storey high-rise is built amongst a concentration of Canadian Heritage Buildings and it was a challenge to re-define the historic landscape without sacrificing the culture of the community. The Post House bridged this gap beautifully. It is seconds away from the famous St. Lawrence Market and the reinvigorated Distillery District. It has luxury affordable residences with spacious 9-foot ceilings. It is located at 105 George Street and was completed in 2010.
This 20-unit building situated at the apex of a tree-lined street redefines the meaning of the word unique. Nestled in the heart of the exclusive Yorkville neighbourhood, each one of the luxury homes in this sought-after building are entirely different in both setting and style. It’s located at 36 Hazelton Avenue and was completed in 2014.
Once an office for Bell Canada, this stylish building is located in Toronto's West end. The retrofitted and refurbished building features an exercise room, a yoga studio, a whirlpool and a sauna. The loft-style homes have ceilings that range from 10.6' to 16' feet in height and the panoramic windows feature fantastic views of the city and lake. It is located at 2 Fielding Road and was completed in 2010.
This 8-storey luxury condo building looks like it came out of a Disney movie. The building has a European flair and has a central location at the epicenter of Vaughan, North York, and Thornhill. Situated in a peaceful ravine, it has a TTC stop at its doorstep, and is directly accessible to major highways (401, 404, & 407). This is ideal for younger buyers who want access to the city, but require a certain level of style. It is located at 2 Maison Parc Court, and was completed in 2008.
