DiamondCorp is a real estate developer committed to quality development in the Greater Toronto Area. They are part of the Whitecastle group of companies and are the active managers of the Whitecastle New Urban Fund. This is a developer that believes in cooperation. Their slogan is, “Building on Legacy,” as they work to follow in the footsteps of Whitecastle’s original founder, Eph Diamond.
Eph led a long and illustrious life. He graduated from Queen's University with a degree in engineering. After graduation, he joined the military where he rose to the rank of officer with the Royal Canadian Navy. After his service, he co-founded the Whitecastle Group and became CEO and chairman of the company.
He was a highly-decorated professional and throughout his life earned numerous awards and recognitions including the Israeli Prime Minister’s medal for Humanitarian Services in 1979, the Human Relations Award from the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews in 1980, an induction to the Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 1988 and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1990, one of our nation’s most prestigious honours. His is a legacy worth building on.
DiamondCorp is led by Eph’s son Stephen Diamond, who serves as the current President and CEO. A lawyer by trade, Stephen started this development firm so that he could negotiate on his own terms and not have to take cues from outside sources.
His objective was to negotiate in a way so he could foster positive relationships with city councillors, city planners, ratepayers and residents. Stephen met his objective and enjoys an exemplary record of achieving consensus with the city, having never required the Ontario Municipal Board to work matters out for him. This streamlined negotiating philosophy means better homes and better returns for his investors.
Stephen and his company believe in progressive city building with an adherence to creating long-term value by rezoning lands for more appropriate purposes and densities. They know that it is also important to understand the community in which you’re building and they have shown an impressive ability to adapt their plans on the fly.
Their current development, The Well, occupies almost eight acres and is a hotly-anticipated, mixed-use project in downtown Toronto. Diamond proved his ability to be flexible when neighbourhood residents felt the site plan didn’t represent the King and Spadina neighbourhood very well, adjusting the architectural design in response to these concerns. He understands that you can’t force your way into creating a community, you need to take cues from the existing residents. Upon completion, The Well will feature office, retail and living space with a public square for hosting public events.
Stephen and his company have observed Toronto's development transformation over the past 10-15 years and they are excited by the future. With each one of his projects, he tries to anticipate how the city will evolve and what it will look like in the coming years. In this way, he continues to be a masterful negotiator and visionary, just like his father.
This developer will continue to shape communities and the identity of Toronto real estate. As they work together with the city and its residents, they will determine the future path of the GTA in this collaborative manner.
