Wilson Heights Neighbourhood

Wilson Heights neighbourhood in North York goes by many names. Also known as Clanton Park and Dublin Heights, this community is blessed with a surprising amount of local amenities that make it a great place to live. It’s also easy to get around because of its proximity to arterial roadways and public transit hubs. As the GTA continues to expand into an increasingly intertwined metropolis, this area is beginning to find itself at the geographical centre of the region.

This area is outfitted with a surprising amount of amenities. There is plenty of green space, one such place being Clanton Park. This is an 11 acre park outfitted with a ball hockey pad, playground, pair of baseball diamonds, and three outdoor tennis courts. There is also Balmoral Park, which holds three outdoor tennis courts, as well as a picnic shelter and splash pad for the kids. In addition to these parks, there’s the Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre. Formerly the North York Centennial Centre, this ice rink was named after Herb Carnegie, a former professional ice hockey player who was recognized for his work training young hockey players. He was inducted to both the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada. The rink becomes a ball hockey pad in the summertime.

The shopping in the area is anchored by Yorkdale Shopping Centre, which borders the neighbourhood in the southwest corner. This mall contains over 250 different shops including apparel stores, banks, services, and department stores. It also has a food court where you can find whatever it is you want to eat. Of course there are plenty of other venues in which to shop. The SmartCentre Toronto (Downsview) has community staples like Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, and the LCBO.

This neighbourhood is historically regarded as a predominantly Jewish area. This is celebrated by the beautiful Beth David B’nai Synagogue, which was built in 1959. It is made of poured concrete and features amazing stained glass windows. Another advantage to living in a traditionally Jewish neighbourhood is the food. A staple eatery in the region is Pancer’s Original Deli located on Bathurst Street. This is your go-to stop for amazing cured meats and smoked meat sandwiches.

The Baycrest Health Sciences facility lies adjacent to this neighbourhood's southern border.  Baycrest aims to become a global leader in geriatric living, healthcare, research, and innovation by anticipating the evolving healthcare culture in Ontario.  It is partnered with the University of Toronto as an academic health sciences centre.  This partnership presents the rare opportunity to invest in a neighbourhood with close proximity to a world class hybrid academic/healthcare facility.

This neighbourhood is becoming a hub for condo development with 53% of total homes sales in the past year being allocated to condos. 44% of total sales were for detached homes. The average home price over the past year was $822,268, which translates into an average condo price of $444,880 and an average freehold home price of $1,522,310.

The neighbourhood finds itself straddling the apex of the Ontario 401 Expressway and Allen Road. Together, these arterial roadways provide residents with access to the entire GTA including Scarborough, Markham, Mississauga, and Downtown Toronto. The area is also serviced with a couple of subway stops. Public transit commuters can access the rest of the city by hopping on the subway from either Wilson Station or Sheppard West (formerly Downsview Station).

This is quickly becoming the new crossroads of the GTA. Its geographically central location means that anywhere in the city is accessible, making it a great location for young couples who work in different parts of the Greater Toronto Area. It is also supplied with fantastic shopping venues, the highlight being Yorkdale Shopping Centre with its abundance of stores. Residents will also find some great dining choices, especially if they’re in the mood for deli food. Developers are taking notice of all the charming qualities in the region, making this a major up-and-coming spot for condo investment.
